Walpurgis Night!

As it is the last day of April, tonight is Walpurgis Night, the old Pagan celebration where devils, ghosts and other critters roam the earth and witches gather in sabbath to do mischiefs. If it sounds like a Halloween for April, it's because it is exactly that. I start longing for Halloween pretty much the moment it is over, so with time Walpurgis Night has become an important part of my countdown to it: I read a few scary stories if I have time, start thinking of decorations and books to buy, etc. I cannot remember when I first heard about Walpurgisnacht, but I think it might have been in the book of the year I mentioned here, in that article about witches. They were naming the important dates in the year when witches gathered, among them the 30th of April. This is where the picture on your right was taken. She is holding her broomstick in an odd fashion, otherwise she is a properly ugly, nasty, menacing witch. And even as a cat lover, I find her black cat downright demonic looking. Beware if you see her or any of her kin tonight!

My new reading lamp

My wife bought me, at my suggestion, a little reading lamp for my birthday. I used to have one when I was a kid, a big clunky goose shaped one, with the head of the goose as the lampshade. I spent many nights reading under the blankets instead of sleeping (until I was caught by my parents). Maybe it is just me going again down nostalgia lane, anyway I thought it would be a very useful present, nothing fancy or particularly high-tech, just useful. So my wife bought me one, not goose shaped but sleep and black with a charger, the only true sign that the lamp is a XXIst century gadget, for when the battery runs out. It turns out the the lamp might be the most useful present I had in years. I have been using it to read in bed since then. It gives me juuust enough light to see clearly what is written on the page and it bothers nobody else in the bedroom. I don't read under the blankets anymore, otherwise reading in bed still has the same charm.

If nature abhors a vacuum...

My fellow blogger and atheist celebrity Ariane Sherine has started blogging again. She wrote a very serious blog post about how to deal with anxiety. It was a very grave post, but I commented on it with something absolutely atrocious. She mentioned Aristotle's alleged saying that "nature abhors a vacuum". I commented this: "If nature abhors a vacuum, don't hoover!" That was absolutely atrocious. I dare you to write a worse word play. All the same, she found it funny and I think it deserves to be a new great unknown line. I hoovered a lot yesterday, so I guess it was on my mind.

Greek mythology reads

I receive mailers from Waterstone's from time to time. Recently, there was one advertising Circe by Madeline Miller. The name got my attention and I suggested it to my wife as a birthday present. She saw it at the local bookshop and bought it for me. Since I am a child I have always been a big fan of Greek mythology and especially anything regarding Ulysses, my favourite Greek hero. If the weeks coming to Christmas is time for me to renew with Norse mythology, the weeks after Easter and leading to summer are for the Greek one. So this novel is on my reading list for the upcoming weeks. I know nothing about the novel and its author, except that she has received lots of praises for it and that it is meant to be really good. I am really looking forward to it.

Question existentielle (326)

California Dreamin'

I am sharing this song tonight, in the honour of my brother PJ, who has recently moved to California because he got a big job there. There are plenty of songs about California, this one is maybe not my favourite, but I wanted something positive (somewhat) and my favourite is dark, moody and dreary (I will let you guess which one I am referring to). California Dreamin' is not exactly upbeat, in fact it is melancholic, but  it has plenty of hope and, well, dreams. Here, while it is not winter, the sky is as grey as grey can be. So anyway, here is its most famous version performed by The Mamas & the Papas (what a silly name, Yanks are not too good with band names, but I digress). I hope you enjoy.

Me trompe-je?

Guerilla Wolfie

My mother send us a package for her grandchild. There were clothes in it, lots of clothes. Some knitted things (see this post) and a new raincoat. You can see it on the picture here. And you can see a glimpse of Domino as well, because Wolfie is obsessed with cats in general and Domino in particular. But I want to blog about the raincoat, as it has an uncanny resemblance to an army camouflage coat. A bit more bright and blue, a bit trendier, but it still looks like camouflage. My mum not being into anything army related or anything remotely resembling manly aggressiveness, I wonder what made her choose this coat in particular. It does fit our son's boisterous temperament and it looks nice on him, so I guess that was the intention. But he looks like Guerilla Wolfie when he wears it.

The Gutter and the Grave

I blogged about it recently, but as I finished it since then, I thought I could have it as today 's reading suggestion. I am talking of course about The Gutter and the Grave, by Ed McBain. Surprisingly it does not feature the detectives of the 87th Precinct, but ex private eye turned drunkard and bum Matt Cordell, who lost his license and everything else, including himself, when he beat up the lover of his wife. Narrated by Cordell himself, the story uses many tropes, some would say clichés, of hard-boiled crime fiction: an investigation on a minor crime (someone stealing from a cashier) quickly leads to one on a murder, then a second murder, there are femmes fatales a plenty and a good deal of shady characters, an oppressive heatwave, violence of all kinds. What makes the novel stand above other similar ones is the strength of McBain's writing: vivid imagery, sharp dialogues, genuine characters behind their archetypes. One cannot go wrong with Ed McBain.

We missed the storm

Our busy day Saturday (it was my birthday) left us exhausted at night, so none of us had much trouble to sleep, when we finally got to sleep. So much so, in fact, that we missed a storm. The first true storm of the year if my calculation is correct. It happened in the middle of the night and it was apparently very strong. The family woke up late the next day, none the wiser. It's only when I saw the ground still wet from the rains that I could tell something had happened. I don't regret it too much: I needed a good night of sleep, which I seldom have, and I got it. But I hope there will be more storms this year and that I will be able to enjoy them.

Grand-maman tricote...

The (young) reader's corner

I blogged before about Catherine's Café in Wallingford. We rediscovered it recently and found new reasons to love it. Well, Wolfie did. He visited the place with his mummy and his grandparents, then with his mum and myself for my birthday. It turns out the café has a children friendly room, with a safety gate that prevent toddlers such as him to leave it unsupervised and with bookcases. Two bookcases: one with adult books, one with children books. Wolfie loves taking said book off the shelves (one of his favourite activities at home too) and just checking them. Of all the little pleasures life can give, there is one I particularly enjoy: reading in a café and going through the books available to the customers. I am so happy my son seems to be enjoying this already.

Saint George's Day!

Happy Saint George's Day everyone! I am writing this post the night before, in caseI cannot find time tomorrow. So no Google Doodle this time. I don't know who is the artist who made this gorgeous image, but I think it might be Alan Lee. In any case, it is fitting, full of action and the dragon seems terrifying, a force beyond nature. Saint George is not only a dragon slayer, he is also the patron saint of England. Given that my son is half-English and is growing up as an English boy, I intend to tell him of the legend and of this very special patron saint. It is quite rare indeed that you have one who killed a dragon and this is something to fire up a young child's imagination. Not that I want him to be overly patriotic or anything, but I think there is something quite fitting about having Saint George patron of Englishmen. And he is a legendary hero a young boy can look up to.

Rocky the black bear

When a parent celebrates his birthday, it always ends up being about the child to a degree, or at least he ends up getting at least one present. This is what happened to Wolfie, in a most unexpected manner. So yesterday we went to Wallingford for my birthday. Wallingford is one of the few English towns celebrating St George's Day, usually the Saturday before. There are many stands and special activities for a few hours. Among them, a stand where they were selling various things to finance the local scouts group. There were fancy and not so fancy items and second hand plush toys. Plush toys that were not merely bought but "adopted", with a certificate of adoption and everything. The lady running it tried to have us buy a leopard, a giraffe, but Wolfie held this black bear the moment I showed it to him and started cuddling him. We then of course had to buy it. At four pounds, it was not expensive, but a bit much for something second hand and full of germs. At least it was for charity. So his name is Rocky (name given on his red tag, we could change it but I like it) and he is the new member of my son's plush menagerie.

On being 41

I am 41 today. The big 4-0 last year did not bother me as much as I thought it would. Turning 30 was worse. It felt worse anyway, when it happened. I don't know how I will celebrate, but like last year it will be fairly quiet. When you reach adulthood and middle age, birthdays tend to be less important. especially when you have children: they just take the stage, so to speak. Even my birthday is in a way all about Wolfie now.

Indian pizza?

This week at work, the girls downstairs (the employees on ground floor are all female, so we call them "the girls downstairs") decided to have pizza. I still have no idea what was the special occasion. I generally don't have special treats unless it's Friday. I had pizza from a local cheap pizza joint. There were not many that inspired me in the menu, so I chose a "tandoori pizza". In other words, this is what pizza would be if Indians had invented the dish. Basically, pizza with chicken and Indian spices. It also had hot pepper and onions. It was spicy. I felt my belly ache all afternoon. Thankfully I only chose a medium size pizza and asked for no side dishes. I enjoy a bit of proper junk food from time to time and this certainly was the proper stuff (see picture), but this was a bit much for me. And I have never been all that keen on fusion cuisine.

Tea and sea

Sometimes, things change so fast, I barely have time to follow. We are well into Spring and Summer is already being prepared. When it comes to my own little bit of consumerism, it means that David's Tea has released a new collection. A sea theme this year. Now as you know, I love their accessories, but of all their seasonal collections I prefer the autumn one (I never miss blogging about it, by the way). But I do love each and everyone of them and this year's sea life collection, of whatever its name, is a particularly nice one. Having tea by the sea to warm yourself up when a cool breeze or a cold wind is blowing, it kind of makes sense. Let's put it this way: tea and sea go together. I will miss this collection like all the others, but I wish I could buy one of these mugs as my tea mug for summertime.

The fox, the bee... and the dinosaurs?

I blogged before about the fox raincoat of Wolfie. Well, it turns out that the fox is not his only totem animal: he has a bee backpack (with that cord thing my wife forbid me to call a leash and allows her to keep a hold of him for more safety) and rubber boots (wellies as the British call them) that have a crest and sharp teeth of dinosaurs. Wolfie is fully equipped and ready to go on an adventure. He often does, in fact. It's a fitting uniform: the fox for cunning and naughtiness, the bee for his cheerful nature, the dinosaurs for his strength and fearlessness.

Traveling first class by train?

I took this picture at the National Railway Museum of York, maybe my favoruite museum in the world. I love everything train related and I am eager to go back on a train journey (see my recent post about it). Thinking about it, it struck me that I never travelled first class. Not by plane, not by boat, not even by train. Of course, first class on short journeys is borderline useless (fron what I saw of First Class wagons) and I wonder if it ever was as glamourous as it was used to be. Trains journeys are, generally speaking, already the most comfortable and pleasant ones. That said, part of me is wondering if we should not give First Class a try one day, for a very long journey, if we can afford it (fat chance).

Gifts for an old man?

It is my birthday soon and my wife asked for a list of suggestions for presents to give me. I generally love making a list of things I'd love to receive, I always have plenty of ideas. But this year, something irked me among the suggestions I gave her. Among other things, I asked for a new wallet, as my current one is about ten years old, if not more, and falling apart, and for a fancy traditional shaving kit, with an old fashioned razor and so on. And tonight I started wondering: are these gifts you would give an old man? I suddenly felt very old asking for them anyway. And it is not even something a man from my generation would ask for.

Crimes on sale (at £1.99)

I decided to take a break from epic historical novels and I am now reading crime fiction again. Well, I say I have decided but it is not quite true. As I have a pile of books to read, I just showed the couples of novels I was considering to Blonde Tickler during her last visit and she said: "this one looks like the best of them all". So I followed her advice as I trust her instincts. The book she was referring to was The Gutter and the Grave by Ed McBain. I know McBain a lot, but this is a new reading experience for me as the novel is not from his 87th Precinct series. It features an ex private eye now drunkard homeless Matt Cordell, who lost his license after beating up his wife's lover, and a few femmes fatales. I bought it at £1.99 at the local Oxfam. That is a true bargain for quality crime fiction and one of the few times when Ed McBain ventured into proper hardboiled territory.

We are going to a First Communion

A friend of my wife invited us to the First Communion of her daughter. That will be the first time we set up foot in a Catholic church since the... First Communion of a former work colleague of hers, who had invited us every friends and acquaintances she had. That was four years ago or so. I had then forgotten when was the last time before I had been in a church for a Catholic ceremony. I guess we do not participate in it, we just basically witness it, like everybody else, but as an apostate I always find a bit strange to see my former fellow Catholics. We are a family of godless heathens, my wife has been since childhood, in my case I had to go through a "deconversion" in my late teens that took a while to figure out. Now I am an outspoken atheist, but I will be on my best behavior on that day, or will do my best not to stir any controversy if anyone asks us any questions (they do sometimes).

It is nevertheless a bit strange: her friend knows I was baptized a Catholic, she thought Wolfie might thus become one, we explained (nicely) that we are not religious and have no intention to have him baptized anything. When he grows up, he can choose to follow whichever God he wants, or none. But I am a bit weary of these invitations to churches. My wife goes to a church group for babies and toddlers sometimes, to keep herself and our son busy, and the ladies there keep asking her whether Wolfie is a godly child (whatever that means) and compliment her on choosing such a Biblical name for him. Her friend adores Wolfie and I suspect she secretly hopes that I will change my mind and have our little cub werewolf baptized, and maybe go back to the flock as well, so we will all be in a state of grace. But anyway, it will give us something to do one weekend. And like I said I will be on my best behavior. Although I can never guarantee if Wolfie will be.

Wolfie and the Rebellion jumper

I blogged before about my jumper from Rebellion Beer, which has been my favourite jumper since 2015 when my wife bought it as a birthday gift. I just find it comfy and nice. I am not the only one in the household to love it: since he is three months old or so, our son has been fascinated by the gold and red label with the brewery's coats of arms (I think it can be called that). Every time I wear it, which is pretty much every weekend, Wolfie loves to touch it, grab it, tap it, stare at it. Must be the bright colours, although sometimes I suspect he also instinctively loves rebellion.

Friday 13 April 2018

Friday the 13th...

Today is Friday the 13th of April. The first Friday the 13th of the year 2018, in case you have not noticed. I hope nobody among my reader is superstitious. I am mentioning it because... Well, because I might as well. Like everybody, I get all excited when Friday comes, it means the weekend is almost here. I usually barely notice when it falls on a 13th. As a child, it was slightly different: Friday the 13th was a moment of excitement, with the added shiver of superstitious fear. I did not truly believe the day was bad luck, but my imagination made me ponder about potential doom.

Guerilla equipment

I took this picture at the York Castle Museum. It is one of the many displays of paraphernalia from World War I the museum has and they fascinated me. Like I mentioned in this post, I am fascinated by them as they have an uncanny resemblance to the toys we used to play war during my childhood. One of my friends had almost exactly that: a water bottle, a compass, a monocular telescope, a Swiss army knife (because he was a Scout). We played war, often of the guerilla sort, which was quite cathartic. Funny to think how something so grave as war can become the subject of childhood games. Games I remember fondly.

Sharks are funny

Sometimes I blog about serious topics, sometimes about high or popular literature, sometimes about trivial things I like, but other times, I just blog about something silly and funny I found on the internet. This post is the latter. One of my friends on Facebook posted this on his wall. I have no idea if this is a one off or if the authors did a series of comic strips about sharks, I have not done any research about it yet, but anyway I thought this joke was absolutely hilarious. Simple and absurd, as I love them. So I had to share it. Who would have thought? Sharks are funny.

Question existentielle (325)

About Caligula

I am reading I, Claudius by Robert Graves, which first book I should expect to finish soon. Then on to a different kind of read, then I will go back to more of Graves story with the second book. But I digress. You can read more about what I think of it so far in this post. Among the many fascinating characters of the novel is Emperor Caligula, the first mad emperor. I found one quote about him by his uncle Claudius (who narrates the novel) particularly interesting: "He was beginning to be unpopular. That the crowds always likes a holiday is a common saying, but when the whole year becomes one long holiday, and nobody has time for attending to his business, and pleasure becomes compulsory, then it is a different matter."

Pretty contemporary, isn't it? There are some of our rulers who fit this bill perfectly. And to think this is meant to be about Ancient Rome.

David's Tea Office Tea Break

I took this picture on the Facebook page of David's Tea. It is about their Office Tea Break offer, which would allow me and my coworkers to have free tea samples. Tea breaks is part of a healthy daily ritual, it allows me to relax and keep my sanity when things are stressful. I really, really, really wish there was some of their shops on this side of the world and at a reasonable distance from where I work. Although working in a very small company, I don't have 50 colleagues so would be unable to benefit from this offer anyway. But I hope some of you can enjoy the Office Tea Break offer.

The next train to take

I took this picture at the National Railway Museum in York. It struck me today that I hadn't taken a train since June 2017, for our last holidays in the UK. That is an extremely long time for me. I am in need of a holiday, and I miss train travels a lot. I will therefore start planning our next train journey. As my readers know, for me the journey by train is part of the pleasure of holidays, sometimes more pleasant than the destination itself.

Alors on boit enfermé, claustrophobe même.

The toddler and the teenager

This afternoon, Blonde Tickler and her mum came to visit us for a few hours. It was lovely to see them. We hadn't in a long while, in my case at least two months, and a catch up was thus way overdue. Wolfie has grown since they last saw him and Blonde Tickler since I had last seen her! In fact she is now a true teenager (even though she is only 12), and a younger version of her mother. But I am reassured as she adores Wolfie just as much as before and is very interested in him. If anything she interacts even more with him. And more importantly: he adores her. He laughed a lot when she played games with him. So I think I found our future babysitter.

"Rooooaaar!"

Wolfie in a fox's clothing

I blogged last week about my son's fox raincoat from Jojo Maman Bébé. I had another picture which I wanted to share here. there is no particular reason for it, I just find this picture so very, very cute. And I absolutely adore that coat. It is almost more like a disguise. A superhero disguise of some sort. I call our boy little Wolfie, but he could be little Foxie. Or Fox Boy. Or FireFox (okay, this one is taken already). Hooded Fox, maybe? What would be a good superhero name for him?

It's the scar

Some sad bit of news to start this post: I saw last weekend that the Action Men displayed in the window of the fancy clothes shop are gone. Already! I did not have time to take more snapshots. Now I must consider my next move carefully: to buy (and if so at what price? and where?) or not to buy these antiques of British childhood entertainment? In the meantime, I thought a lot about it and I think I know what I really like about them and make them stand out: it's the scar some of the Action Men sport on their cheek. It gives them this edge, this extra veneer of menace and mystery. Good guy or villain, a scar means business, especially if it is on his face. They know what danger is, they have faced it in the past, it nearly ended up badly and they have the scar to prove it. The scar is what makes the Action Man on this picture uber cool. It means he has a history.

The Aroma of Books

I found this image on one of the many Facebook pages of bookshops I follow. I have never been much of a scientist and my knowledge of chemistry is basic at best, but found this fascinating. As even though I am not a scientist, even an amateur one, I am very much a bookworm. Which means that I don't only read books, but I have smelled them. Reading is an experience that touches more than one sense. I think I will spend some time in the near future just smelling the books I have and the books I buy, old and new.

Mysterious lodge

There is a nice big park near my working place where I love go walking on my break when the weather allows it. In this park, there is a quaint little lodge, which according to what I read is quite old, just like the park itself (as in a few centuries old). Apparently, it is also inhabited, although I have never seen any sign of life in there. It is true that I cannot really spend too much time looking at it and not from too close, I wouldn't want to be mistaken for a peeper. But in any cayse, I like the look of the lodge, it would fit a whodunit, a horror story, or even (better) a fairy tale. It is one of these places that set my imagination on fire.

How will April turn out?

I have been asking myself the question. It has barely started and Easter is already over and although it can sometimes be in March, for me it truly belong to April. April is a tricky month in many ways: weather wise it can easily go everywhere,be very cold or very hot. I still have one thing to look forward to: my birthday. Anyway, what do you think of the month and what are you hoping for, or dreading, this April or any April?

D&Dr at Easter

Easter has come and gone and for some reason tonight it got me thinking about the times when we could play at Dungeons & Dragons regularly, my friends, brothers and I. Easter, like Christmas, allowed us to have a long break when we could play more often, but generally we did not play all that much then. I don't know if this was coincidence, but Easter was around the time when the latest important mission was finished and we were running out of adventure ideas, or at least had not build on the ideas we've had to prepare a new mission. So most of the gaming sessions we had around Easter consisted of our characters staying in one spot (an inn, a forest, a monastery) our traveling from point A to point B, waiting for something to happen. They were gaming sessions very light on stories, but full of atmosphere and gave us plenty of occasion for character development. And we prepared ourselves for future menaces. In a way, they were like this picture from Larry Elmore, called Hidden Danger: there was something foreboding about these times. I am generally not keen on warrior chicks in fantasy arts, but I like this one all right.

The April Fool is here!

I could not forget to mention it: today is not only Easter, but also April Fool's Day. So I decided to celebrate it here, briefly, with a joke from Peanuts. One day I must blog about Snoopy as the Easter Beagle, but that will be for another Easter. And I don't know why I find this strip so funny, but I do. There is just something hilarious about Snoopy's disguise in this one.

Hot cross buns for Easter

Happy Easter everyone! I hope you are enjoying your day. We are having a quiet one here and as I am typing this I haven't had chocolate yet (I kid you not). But we started the day with a very traditional and very British Easter special: the hot cross buns, which we all ate for breakfast. Not the many variants we find nowadays in supermarkets (some of these variants are delicious), but the proper stuff (which we bought in Sainsbury's). A little anecdote about them: it is the one indulgence of my very English mother-in-law, who normally does not like anything sweet. I am not that keen on them, but around Easter I find it a nice tradition.
